Civil rights activist Andrew Young on Thursday, May 31, will meet with more than 600 students to encourage them to pick up the “torch” of leadership and service. Go-To Cards would replace yellow buses provided by MPS for high school students. Former Chicago Bulls player Khalid El-Amin led the North High Polars to three consecutive state championships in the 90s and is returning to "help kids of the next generation to be better than we were. I mean that’s really how you build a tradition, that’s really how you build a legacy."

The Polars at North High got into the winter spirit with a flurry of activity this last week. Students in advisories worked together and executed their designs in the "Deck the Halls" contest. The judges had a difficult time deciding who should be the winner and ultimately they settled on four categories for awards. See more.
Under the direction of Mr. Adrian Davis, the North High Drum Line lit up the Holidazzle Parade on December 11. The NCHS Drum Line was accompanied by the North High Student Council led by advisor Tina Schaefer. Our students' enthusiasm stirred up the crowd and got the parade off to a great start. Mr. Peter Christensen, North's principal remarked that it was a great December night for a parade and that the students from North dazzled the crowd as they continued to show others what it is to have Polar Pride. The first students taking the newest North High School curriculum may focus their studies around arts and communications/media. And they could explore social justice issues as leaders in hands-on service. The second school focus, for the subsequent batch of students, will be on the once-popular Summatech or other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum. On Wednesday, August 25, the North Staff and Community welcomed students for the 2011-12 school year. Many smiles were shared as students and families reconnected after the summer months. Many new faces were welcomed, also! There was the opportunity to sign up for sports and afterschool activities, play tennis against a "pro", sample salsa made from the vegetables grown from the North Community Education Class efforts and to have a bite to eat. Sarah Johnson met an assistant dean from Harvard at a family reunion and was told about the Harvard summer program. She applied for the program and has been admitted to the Secondary School Program of the 2010 Harvard summer school as a residential student. Sarah will take real Harvard courses and earn credit. Margot DeWilde, an actual survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, visited Mr. Heegard's U.S. history class this past week. She spoke to his students about her experiences in Germany, Holland and Poland. She also answered questions from kids who had become mesmerized by her true story. The StarTribune Sports section is featuring Minneapolis North's Nathanial Lasley. For the past four years he has taken advantage of a program to encourage city golfers. "Lasley has shaved 30 strokes off his game since joining the Fairway Foundation program in middle school." The North and Dunwoody Peer Educators group was awarded the "Advocate of the Year Award." The award was given by the Minnesota Organization for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program. (MOAPP) This was the first time a group was honored with this award. The organization is well known for their advocacy for youth accessing responsible sexual health education. Photos and more.
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) are the state tests that help districts measure student progress toward Minnesota's academic standards and meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. A message from MPS District headquarters. MPS submitted an application for the Hennepin Youth Sports Program money to have the main gymnasium and auxiliary gym floors done at six of the seven high schools (Henry was not included in this round because the floors were recently redone. It is critical that we get people to call, send letters, and email the commissioners to show their support for this project. The commissioners’ offices are currently keeping track of which proposals are receiving the most support from the community. Without help, we will not win this money. Recognized as the Twin Cities’ public radio voice for jazz and education KBEM is a program of the Minneapolis Public Schools SchoolsSScjpp;Schools (MPS) located at North High. Approximately 150 students annually participate in KBEM’s hands-on educational program, which focuses on all aspects of broadcasting and production. Descendants of Africa hosted a DFL Gubernatorial Candidates' Forum on March 18th, 2010 at North. African American and other African communities came together to dialogue with the candidates.
Campaigns for Governor that attended included: Former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton, Mayor R.T. Rybak State Representatives Margaret Anderson-Kelliher, Paul Thissen, Tom Rukavina, State Senator John Marty, Matt Entenza, Ole Savior and Peter Idusogie. The Exploradome from the Minneapolis Planetarium came to North on February 4th. Students lay on their backs on the floor and zoomed to everything from earth to the edge of the observable universe and anything in between. The Exploration was projected on a HUGE dome by a fish-eye projector which gave a rather remarkable 3D effect. Snodaze activities were held in the auditorium. Rashad Washington Octavia Smith were crowned King and Queen in a dignified ceremony.The Coronation was followed by a wonderful fashion show in which 40 some students modeled on the stage. Mayor R.T. Rybak presented at a spirited auditorium for our freshmen. He spoke about how important it is too create a positive vision for oneself at a young age. (The mayor decided at the age of 13 that he wanted to become a mayor.) He asked everyone in the room to close their eyes and try to see a vision for themselves. He then answered a wide range of questions from the audience. This reporter found that he had a remarkable knowledge about the Northside, commenting specifically on the many positive things going on. He said he wanted to teach everyone to do a proper handshake. He showed one student how to grip firmly a person's hand, look them in the eye, and then say your name. Their picture is posted on the right side bar and their story is told in their own words on the website. The website has information for candidates.
The Friends of North Community High School Foundation was established in 1999 to assist students and faculty with finding opportunities for students at North High in Minneapolis. The foundation is comprised of friends, community volunteers, staff and alumni who assist with fund raising, grants to support school programs and scholarships for students that attend North High. Carlton Littlejohn was featured as the athlete of the week by Kare 11 News after last week's game against Patrick Henry. The senior scored 3 rushing touchdowns, intercepted a pass for a 90 yard score and even threw one deep to star receiver Ariel Deloney. LittleJohn accounted for 5 touchdowns in the north season opener. The score of the North/Patrick Henry game was 45-6.

On Tuesday, January 20th, North joined inaugural celebrations across the country as President Obama was sworn into office. We watched the inaugural in the auditorium to watch the inaugural ceremonies. Dignitaries attended. The celebration also focused on our new "Academic Partnership" with Dunwoody Academy.
