9th Grade

Physical Science

Hello and welcome to North Community High School! I am currently the North Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (NSTEM) 9th grade Physical Science teacher. I am also the North Polar's assistant football coach and science department lead. I have been teaching here since 2015, cultivating our young scholars interests in topics ranging from physics to chemistry, even sprinkling in a little astronomy and earth science. My teaching philosophy is to treat the brain like a muscle - challenge it and make it strain a bit in order for it to grow stronger. I do this by exposing my students to natural phenomena through hands-on, interactive activities and then helping them figure out how and why their experiences are the way they are. In this way, I am not just telling them scientific facts, but developing their scientific skills, knowledge, and literacy in the hope of assisting our scholars in reaching their full potential of becoming life-long learners, problems solvers, and educated community citizens.

A little about myself:

Born in Rochester, but raised in Sioux Falls, SD, I have traveled around quite a bit and tried out a few different paths, from a professional water-skiing career at Sea World to a brief stint in medical school. In 2005, I made Minneapolis my home and worked for 7 years as a pharmaceutical chemist at 3M. During this time, I coached high school lacrosse as well as became a show director/coach of our city’s local amateur water-ski show team, the Twin Cities River Rats, where we perform shows just down the road from NAAC on the Mississippi River. In 2014, I decided to meld my love of science with my passion for working with youth and obtained my Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota and have been teaching at North ever since. When I am not teaching, I love hanging out with family, walking the dog at Minnehaha falls, biking, reading, and anything to do with cooking. I am proud to be on the Polar team and am excited to be working here, seeing our scholars grow and learn.
