Dr. Shawn R Harris-Berry is currently the Principal of North Community High School, Academies of Art and Communications (NAAC) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (NSTEM).  Being commissioned the then Superintendent Dr. Bernadeia Johnson to fresh start North High, Dr. Berry with collaboration with the Institute of Student Achievement (ISA) and seven staff members opened the doors to 67 founding students in the Fall of 2012. Their mission was to restore North High to its days of academic rigor and glory.  Today, North High consists of over 80 staff members and 460 students.  The diligence of the Polars have resulted in a 39% increase in its graduation rate with over 90% of its graduates being accepted into post-secondary institutions. Its scholars have earned multiple District and State academic awards to include History Day and World Savvy.  In addition, North’s athletic scholars have brought 3 State Championships to the community; two 1A State Basketball Championships (2016 and 2017) and one 1A State Football Championship (2017). North High is once again the pride of the Northside!

Dr. Berry began her teaching career at Sanford Middle School in 1987 as a Business Education Teacher. She later joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1988 and served for six years as a Clerical Specialist. Entering the Administrative ranks in 1995, she has served as an Assistant Principal at Northeast, Folwell, Ramsey, and Anwatin Middle Schools.  In 2007, she was appointed Principal of Whittier Elementary IB World School.  Dr. Berry has also served as an Adjunct Associate Professor at St. Mary’s University, teaching graduate and post-graduate courses, and an Instructor at Spiritual Life Bible College.  Dr. Berry accredited her preparation to lead the efforts at North High School to her vast experience afford to her by Minneapolis Public Schools, her steadfast Faith in God, and her own K-12 educational experience.

As a product of Milwaukee Public schools, Dr. Berry was a founding student of Jackie Robinson Open Classroom in the mid 70’s.  She later was selected to attend Nicolet High School in Glendale, WI where she graduated in 1981.  Continuing her education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, Dr. Berry graduated with a B.S. in Business Education in 1985.  In 1994, she graduated with a Masters in Secondary Administration from the University of St Thomas.  A year later, she received her K-12 Administrative and Superintendent License from St Mary’s University. In 2000, Dr. Berry received a two-year certificate from Spiritual Life Bible School and her Ministerial License.  Overcoming her biggest educational fears, she earned an ED.D in Educational Leadership in 2005 from St. Mary’s University.  In addition Dr. Berry is a recipient of the National Institute for School Leadership, Institute for Educational Leadership/ Education Policy Fellowship and the Corporate Partnership for Principals Program. 

Dr. Berry finds balance and joy in life through her faith walk, husband, adult children, grandchildren, and mother.
