Mr. Vreeland's Ecology class learned that an aquaponic system combines growing fish and plants together in a system where they benefit eachother.

Last week the class completed finishing touches of creating an aquaponic system in the workship room.  Lights were installed over the plant beds, fish were brought in, and seeds were planted.  The Aquaponics system has goldfish and koi fish in the fish tank.  The

water from the fish tank is used to water and fertilize plants in the plant beds.  Currently there are lettuce and tomato plants, but more types of plants will be added soon.

A group also meets on Mondays after school to do maintenance on the aquaponics systems, and other environmentally-focused projects.  If anyone is interested in learning more about aquaponics or wants to be involved, they are welcome to join!
