Men's Hockey

Hockey began at North during the 1909-1910 school year.  The first team consisted of eight players.  The played all their games outside, relying on cold weather to make sure ice was available.  Because hockey, in the early days, was do dependant on the weather, there were years that the school did not field a team.  Hockey became a sport sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League in 1944-1945. North has never appeared in a state tournament in any configuration of the team.  North has also never won any conference titles in Hockey.  The best team fielded by the Polars was the 1940-1941 team that placed second in the conference.

Since the 1989-1990 school year, North has fielded a combined team with one or more City schools.  From the 1989-1990 season through the 19998-1999 season, North and Henry fielded a combined team.  From 1999-2000 through 2004-2005, North, Henry and Edison combined to form a team.  During the 2005-2006 season, North, Henry and Southwest fielded a combined team.  Since 2006-2007, North, Henry, Washburn and Southwest have combined to be called “Minneapolis West Mustangs.”

Records of the past coaches have been hard to find.  Currently, former Minnesota North Star Tom Younghans coaches the West Mustangs (2007-2008 to Present), Tony McGee coached the West team in its inaugural season, 2006-2007,  He also coached the combined North, Henry and Edison team from 1999-2000 through 2004-2005.  Robert Ulm coached the combined North-Henry squad during 1994-1995 and 1995-1996.  John Donovan was the last coach of a purely North team, coaching the team from 1986-1987 through 1988-1989. There was no team in 1985-1986.  Mike Burkhardt coached from 1983-1984 through 1984-1985.  Tim Alm coached 1982-1983.  Larry Hartse led the team in 1976-1977 and 1977-1978.  Larry Alm coached 1969-1970 through 1975-1976.  Other coaches included: Roxie Pestello (1968-1969); Walter Childers (1967-1968), Larry Hendrickson (1966-1967) Walter Childers (1964-1965 through 1965-1966), Douglas Larson (1963-1964) Harry Brown (1959-1960 through 1962-1963), Jack Behrendt (1953-1954 through 1958-1959), Edward Soltys (1952-1953), Gill Jacobson (1951-1952), Tom Moore (1950-1951), Marvin Skaurud (1946-1947 through 1948-1949), Carl Larson (1945-1946), E.
