Women's Hockey

Women’s Hockey is a relatively new sport, being introduced by the Minnesota State High School League for the 1994-1995 school year.  Since the 1995-1996 school year, North has field a combined team with the other six Minneapolis schools (Edison, Henry, Roosevelt, South, Southwest and Washburn) as the “Minneapolis Novas”  Twice, in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999, the Novas missed the state tournament, losing in the region championship game.

Only one North student, Heather Rawson (Class of 2002) has played for the Novas.  She played during the 2000-2001 season.  However, a second female, Naomi “Betsy” Freelove (Class of 1991), played on the North-Henry Men’s team during the 1988-1989 and 1989-1990 seasons.

Head coaches of the team have included John Wareham (2004-2005 to present), Craig Teiken (2002-2003), Steve Steege (2000-2001), Marni Orthey (1998-1999 through 1999-2000) and Mary Brown (1995-1996 through 1997-1998).  Information has nor been found as to who coached the team for the 2001-2002 and 2003-2004 seasons.
