My name is Ms. Kate, I am new to the North High team and to the Minneapolis Public School District, but not new to North Minneapolis. I have been fortunate to work for several years in public and charter schools and community agencies on the north side with students from kindergarten through post-high school. I am passionate about the north side community and extremely excited to be supporting students and families of North Academy of Arts and Communication and North Senior Academy!

About Me

Fat Cats
My fat cats being affectionate before play fighting.

I am originally from a small town in rural Iowa close to Iowa City in the southeastern part of Iowa. I grew up in an old farmhouse with many, many animals always around. I went to college at the University of Iowa and then was ready to move to a faster paced, more interesting area of the nation. I have two younger brothers who people always think are older than me because they are so tall. They are both musicians in St Paul. My youngest brother, Jake, is a drummer in a bluegrass band. My middle brother, Joe, is a guitarist in a heavy metal band.

My family has a long history in schools, all the way back to my grandparents who met as boys and girls high school P.E. teachers. My dad broke the mold and became an experienced Nurse Practitioner with patients with heart problems, while my mom is a Special Education Assistant Educator with pre-school students.

I live in St Paul with my partner, Matt, who is starting graduate school in fall 2012. He is going to get his Masters in Social Work and eventually work in a hospital setting with veterans or children and families. We enjoy traveling to new (and cheap) places, watching stupid reality shows, and narrating the many adventures of our dieting cats.

I also have two fat cats that are spoiled. My friends sometimes tease that in another life I was a dorky cat-lady, which is probably true (and might be true about this life too). My fat cats, named Stella and Jude, have many boring adventures including finding and destroying insects, and finding new ways to manipulate me into giving them more food. It’s very interesting, trust me.

I love music, movies, non-pretentious art, making collages and jewelry, visiting new places, reading, animals, Shark Week, being outside when it is 70 degrees and not buggy, ice cream, and meeting new people. Most of all, I love to listen to people’s stories and their experiences in life. :)
